Everything you should know about CATV Optical Transmitter

What is CATV optical transmitter? It is an important device in cable television network. It converts catv electrical signals into optical signals. By reading this article, you can understand what is CATV optical transmitter, the consist of optical transmitter, application of optical transmitter in CATV System and Precautions for using optical transmitter and optical amplifier.

What is CATV optical transmitter?

CATV optical transmitter is a device that converts electrical signals into optical signals for fiber-optic transmission in cable television networks. Optical transmitters and optical receivers together form the core parts of the CATV optical communication system.

When sending a message, an electrical signal is fed into a optical transmitter. The light source inside the optical transmitter emits a light signal driven by an electrical signal. Optical transmitters are widely used in the fields of optical communications.

The Consist Of Optical Transmitter

The key components of an optical transmitter are optical source, driver and data source. This has to do with how does optical transmitter work.

1.Optical Source

How does optical transmitter work? Converting electrical signals into optical signals relies on the optical source, one of the core components of the optical transmitter. Optical transmitter usually use semiconductor lasers such as LDs as light sources.

2.Drive circuit

The driving circuit is an important part of the optical transmitter. It is used to control the light emission of the light source. It can receive electrical signals from signal sources and convert them into current or voltage signals suitable for light source operation. The performance of the drive circuit will directly affect the luminous quality of the light source and the transmission effect of the optical signal.

3.Data Source

Data sources can be various devices. Such as sensors, computers, etc., this is not fixed.

4.Modulator

Some optical transmitter also contain modulators internally. It can control the luminous intensity or frequency of the light source according to changes in electrical signals. Modulators can also modulate electrical signals onto optical signals to achieve information transmission.

Application of Optical Transmitter in CATV System

In the CATV system, the application of optical transmitter is primarily reflected in signal transmission.

application of optical transmitter in CATV System

Within the CATV system, fiber optic transmitters can be used at various stages such as the headend, optical nodes, and user distribution networks. Specifically, in the headend, fiber optic transmitters convert signals into optical signals, which are then transmitted through fiber optics to the optical nodes. The optical nodes then distribute the signals to the various user distribution networks. During this process, the optical nodes can amplify the optical signals, with devices like amplifiers capable of enhancing the strength of these optical signals.

Precautions for Using Optical Transmitter and Optical Amplifier

1.Compatibility

Ensure that the output wavelength of the optical transmitter matches the wavelength of the optical signal received by the amplification window of the optical amplifier (also called EDFA). Optical amplifiers are usually designed to amplify optical signals in a specific wavelength range. In CATV optical communication system, the mostly used wavelength is 1550nm, the normal wavelength range is 1540~1565 nm. The optical amplifier can only with 1550nm wavelength CATV optical transmitter. If the optical transmitter wavelength is 1310nm, they will not work.

2.Input Power

It should be noted that the output power of the optical transmitter must meet the input requirements of the optical amplifier. Excessively high input power may cause the optical amplifier to be overloaded or even damaged. Too low a power may not result in sufficient amplification. In CATV optical communication system, the optical input power for optical amplifier is about -10~+10 dBm.  The optical power to the optical amplifier must be in the range.
There is also some brands EDFA which require the input optical power is greater than 0 dBm. If the received optical power is less than 0 dBm,  the CATV optical amplifier will not work.

Testimonials

Lomoveishiy – Finland

I needed those to connect my PC on the third floor to have internet access in that room, and ISP installed their modem on the first floor only. After dropping fiber patch cables, plugged in all cables into these media converters at both sides, and link came up instantly. Was much easier than I thought!

Raymond – USA

Great experience – units worked straight out of the box – just needed plug in cables and we were done. I also like the possibility to enable jumbo frames, while we do not have a need for this feature at the current moment it’s great to have this option.
