With the popularity of fibre optic technology, the fiber optic cable fusion splicers that can perform fusion splicing is produced. It is an important equipment often used in the construction and maintenance of optical fibre cables. After reading this article, you can learn about what a fiber fusion splicer is and how we can use the fiber fusion splicer.

What is fiber optic cable fusion splicers
A Fiber Fusion Splicer is a device used to join two optical fibers into a single fiber by heating and melting their ends together. Through using this fusion splicer, fiber optic signals can be transmitted from one fiber to another with very low loss.

After understanding what the fusion splicer is, we are running into a critical problem. How do we use it?
How to use fiber optic cable fusion splicers
Preparing the fiber cable:
Using a fiber optic stripper to remove the coating of the fibre optic cable . You need to remove the outer coating, the buffer coating and usually a protective layer, leaving only the bare fiber optic to operate. And there are kinds of fiber optics, which need to take different stripping methods.

After cleaning the fiber optic end-face, we need to cut the fiber accurately with a fiber optic cutting tool. The cutting should ensure that the fiber end face is flat and vertical for the later successful splicing.
Setting up the fiber fusion splicer:
Switch on the fiber optic fusion splicing machine, it will normally adjust itself automatically to ensure that it is working correctly.
Then, placing the fiber into the V-groove of the fusion splicer, making sure that the fiber is aligned and securely held in the fusion splicer’s clamps.

Fiber optic fusion splicing machine usually have an automatic or manual alignment function. If it is automatic alignment, the machine will align the fiber automatically. If it is manual, you will need to carefully adjust the fiber to ensure that the fiber end faces are aligned and parallel in the viewing mirror.
Start splicing:
Pressing the ‘Start’ button. The machine will melt and join the fibre ends together by heating them with an electric arc.The fusion splicer will display the splice loss on the screen to help you assess the quality of the splicing.
After fusion is completed and verified, slide the heat shrink tubing over the splice point and heat the tubing with a heat gun so that it wraps tightly around the splice point to provide protection.
Test the fiber optic:
After fusion splicing, it is recommended to test the fiber optic link with an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) to check the fusion loss and the performance of the entire link.If the fusion bonding fails, it may be due to the following reasons.

Inaccurate alignment: Ensure that the fibre optic end faces are correctly aligned, otherwise high losses will result.
Contamination of the end-face: Any dirt or grease will affect the fusion splice, make sure it is clean.
