what is difference between SFU and HGU ONU?

For user-side equipment in broadband fiber access, we often see English terms such as SFU and HGU ONU. What do these terms mean? What’s the difference?

What is SFU ONU?

Single Family Unit popularly known as SFU is a classification of ONU which is built for a single family unit or individual home users coupled with broadband access terminal function which is mostly used in FTTP processes.

Considering the fact that SFU is an ONU device, it serves as a bridge between the OLT and home devices. The device posses 1 or 4 interfaces provided in Ethernet /IP that supports VOIP and CATV services.

What is HGU ONU? 

Home Gateway Unit also known as HGU is a family network with uplink interface of PON mainly used in FTTH setups. Comparatively to to SFU, HGU integrate score complex control and management. HGU provides 4 interfaces which makes it possible to access Ethernet/ IP,VoIP, optional CATV service and USB interface. At the physical and Link layer of the OSI model, the HGU device supports TR069, EMS local and remote management relating to the PON interface. It also assists routing protocol and it’s able to derive broadband dial-up and the computer or mobile terminal devices connecting to the network without dial-up. HGU suitable for mass operation and management.

 What is the difference between SFU ONU and HGU ONU? 

When it comes to choosing an ONU, understanding the properties between each ONU and knowing the difference play a significant role. HGU compared to SFU uses and report to the Virtual Ethernet Internet Point which is the total interface of ONU. HGU integrates all functions of ONU and RG in its management. HGU is mostly used at homes and has WiFi properties. While on the other hand SFU supports only the OMCI domain and also uses and report to the Physical Path Termination Point. The SFU has bridging functionalities therefore being able to support multiple VLAN functions whiles its Ethernet ports are able to be configured and managed by OLT through ONU Management and Control Interface.
Simply say, the SFU ONU only has bridge function, no router function. SFU ONU need to work with router. HGU has the router function.
