What is FWDM Filter Wavelength Division Multiplexer

The Filter Wavelength Division Multiplexer (FWDM) is a key technology used in optical communication to manage the transmission of multiple wavelengths over a single optical fiber. After reading this article, you can understand what the Filter WDM is and why we need it.

What is Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)?

Before understanding the FWDM, it is important to understand the principle of WDM. It is a technique that transmits multiple signals, each carried a different wavelength over a single optical fiber. This increases the capacity of the fiber to boost network bandwidth significantly.

What is FWDM(Filter Wavelength Division Multiplexing)?

A Filter Wavelength Division Multiplexer (FWDM) uses optical filters that selecting some wavelengths to pass through while blocking others. It is based on Thin Film Filter (TFF) technology. In this way, the Filter WDM can combine multiple optical signals (multiplexing) or separate them (demultiplexing).

Multiplexing: During the multiplexing process, FWDM combine several optical signals from different sources into one composite signal that is transmitted over a single optical fiber.

De-multiplexing: When the composite signal reaches its destination, FWDM can then separate the signals, allowing each individual signal to the appropriate receiver or processing system.

The optical filters used in FWDM , which pass only a specific range of wavelengths. It blocks specific wavelengths while allowing others to pass through the filter. The rest of the locked wavelengths are reflected by the mirror and passed through the filters set up later. All operations are carried out simultaneously over a single fiber optic.

FWDM EDFA application

CATV transmits the 1550nm wavelength and OLT transmits the 1490nm wavelength into Filter WDM over the same fiber. The 1550nm wavelength passes through the filters of it and reaches the receiver. whereas the 1490nm wavelength reflects off the filters and reaches the ONU. The 1310nm wavelength from the ONU is reflected at the Filter WDM filter and passes through to the OLT.

What are the differences between FWDM, CWDM, and DWDM?

The main difference is that Filter WDM can support bidirectional communication and Thin Film Filters technology. The device combines or separates light at different wavelengths in a wide wavelength range.

Compared to DWDM, FWDM supports less channels. It can expand the capacity of single fiber to achieve bidirectional communication. This may be less efficient than the tighter channel spacing of DWDM. It also has a lower bandwidth capacity than DWDM.

Why do we need FWDM?

Increased Capacity: By combining multiple channels (each at a different wavelength) over a single fiber, it significantly increase the capacity of optical networks, allowing for more data to be transmitted over the same infrastructure.

Cost Efficiency: Filter WDM help reduce the need for additional fibers in telecom networks and data centers, leading to cost savings in infrastructure and maintenance.

Scalability: Filter WDM make it easier to scale optical networks. As demand for bandwidth grows, operators can simply add more channels (wavelengths) without the need for extensive new fiber installations.

Reduced Signal Loss: Optical filters in FWDM are designed to introduce minimal loss to the signals, ensuring high transmission quality and reducing the need for repeaters over long distances.

Testimonials

Lomoveishiy – Finland

I needed those to connect my PC on the third floor to have internet access in that room, and ISP installed their modem on the first floor only. After dropping fiber patch cables, plugged in all cables into these media converters at both sides, and link came up instantly. Was much easier than I thought!

Raymond – USA

Great experience – units worked straight out of the box – just needed plug in cables and we were done. I also like the possibility to enable jumbo frames, while we do not have a need for this feature at the current moment it’s great to have this option.
